Nike Zoom Freak 1 is the first in the new collaboration between Nike and NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, one that we’ll review today in short. The name of the sneaker comes from his nickname “Greek Freak” , one that he earned with his skills on the court , even more remarkable for a player his height. This sneaker takes cues from Nike Kobe series and it was designed as a performance basketball shoe but nevertheless street ready. Giannis’s style of play was taken in consideration when designing this shoe, Nike adding elements to maximize support for long strides and extra traction on the court.
The upper of the Nike Zoom Freak 1 is made of one piece mesh for maximum comfort and breathability. Simple at surface, the upper hides several internal bands to lock the foot in a stable fit. A new ,custom logo made for this series lays on the tongue and outsole. It was inspired from Giannis heritage with Greek and Nigerian elements. The back logo resembling number 34 is built much on the same concept , looking like a reversed Greece flag. The sole features double Zoom Air units under the heel for optimal cushioning and foam throughout. The reversed, oversized Swoosh logo gives a unique look and opens the door for many customizations. The outsole features a traction pattern built much on the same idea as the logos on this sneaker. It also has on display a touching message for his late father.
All in all the Nike Zoom Freak 1 is a sneaker with a lot of personality, combining classic elements with attractive detailing. The first pair names “All Bros” debuted in July 28th 2019. Update: In 2021 Nike came up with a budget friendly sneaker, the Giannis Immortality which a year later was at its second edition already.
