Story
Nike’s journey with Lunar technology began in 2008, when it introduced a cushioning system that transformed the sneaker landscape with its lightweight bounce and plush comfort. Fast forward to 2024, and Nike has decided to revive this beloved technology, creating the Lunar Roam. This shoe not only taps into nostalgia but also showcases Nike’s confidence in the enduring appeal of its innovations. The return of Lunar foam is exciting for sneaker enthusiasts who remember its original impact. The Lunar Roam reflects a blend of past and present, offering a fresh yet familiar experience for those who appreciate both style and performance.
Upper
The upper of the adidas Samba classic features a signature design that inspired the creation of new styles for generations. The T shaped suede overlay in the toe cap area and the elongated tongue are elements that are specific to this style. It is a look that many find easy to sport with any attire, casual or not. The combination of leather and suede makes it a quite durable shoe while the TPU heel counter adds stability to the shoe. Most of the cushioning is found in the ankle area while in the tongue is quite minimal. It makes for a comfortable shoe that feels great on and off the pitch. We realized quite fast during this adidas Samba classic review that unlike many sneakers from decades ago, this sneaker is still relevant as an indoor soccer shoe.
Sole Unit
The sole unit of the adidas Samba classic is quite minimal, being designed to give the wearer stability and a close to ground feel. Much like all retros there is a removable EVA insole that makes up for most of the cushioning in the sole when you first put these on. It wears out after a while, much faster than the rest of the shoe but that is why it is removable so you can get a fresh one. Just under it is the rubber sole that features a honeycomb pattern that is thinning out towards the forefront. It does a decent job with the heel to toe transition and the shock absorption especially under the heels. This whole setup makes it a good sneaker to wear casually, at school or for any light athletic activities. Since it lacks serious arch support it is not recommended to wear these where you need to stand up for long hours.
Upper
The upper of the Lunar Roam prioritizes comfort without sacrificing performance. Made from lightweight materials, it allows for excellent breathability—perfect for all-day wear. One standout feature is the supportive Magwire cables integrated into the lacing system. These cables provide targeted support where you need it most, ensuring a secure fit. Durability hasn’t been overlooked either; extra rubber around the heel area addresses common wear points, helping to extend the life of this model that is made for everyday wears.
Sole Unit
At the heart of the Lunar Roam is its sole unit, featuring remastered Lunar foam technology. This dual-density foam system combines softer inner foam with a firmer outer shell to create a balance between cushioning and stability. While some may notice that this version of Lunar foam feels firmer than earlier iterations, it still provides adequate support for daily activities. The outsole features strategically placed rubber for traction and durability, ensuring that you can navigate urban environments confidently.
Are They Comfortable?
Comfort is where opinions about the Nike Lunar Roam can vary. The support for some might be nice, but for others it has been reported to feel stiff. With consistent wear, the upper starts to break in becoming more comfortable. For those who prioritize a stable fit over extreme softness, the Lunar Roam could be just what they’re looking for.
Bottom Line
The Nike Lunar Roam successfully marries nostalgia with modern design elements. It brings back beloved Lunar cushioning while integrating features like Magwire support cables. Its stylish design and vibrant color options make it suitable for various outfits, whether you’re heading to work or out with friends. While priced at $150, it sits comfortably in the mid-range of lifestyle sneakers. The weight of each shoe—around 287 grams—makes them light enough for daily use without sacrificing stability. In conclusion, while some may find the cushioning firmer than expected compared to other Nike offerings, the combination of style and heritage makes the Lunar Roam an intriguing option in today’s sneaker market.
