The Air Max SYSTM is one of the new styles from Nike this year , one that we’ll have a closer look and review its features today. Year 2022 is one that will be remembered for the hiked prices and the footwear industry is one that was not spared. While the likes of Nike Air Max 90 are now retailing for $130+ the prices for the “budget” sneakers from this line have also gone up. The SYSTM (short for SYSTEM) is one sneaker that aims to be in the more affordable category at a $100 price tag. Nike has always produced such sneakers with a lower price than the more hyped pairs, with the Torch, SC, or the Excee falling in that category.
How They Fit
Just released in the fall of 2022, we got our hands on a pair of this style in the classic black, gray and white colorway. Out of the box the SYSM boots some cool looks with a new TPU unit just above the Air Max unit standing out as a distinct feature. The shoes look cool but it’s clear that this piece of design, while adding some heel support it also adds some weight, these being some of the heaviest Air Max sneakers we’ve seen in a while. Otherwise they feel quite plushy and quite comfortable and they feel true to size. As with most of this line they run a bit narrow so if you have wider feet you may want to go up half the size of these. For a Nike shoes size chart you can check out this link.
Upper
The upper of the Nike Air Max SYSTM features a light padded mesh with suede and synthetic classic and no sew overlays. There are some elements that remind us of the Air Max 1 like the size of the Swoosh logo or the front overlays but surely the shape of the unit sole takes over and gives it an unique look. There is plenty of padding around the ankle collar and tongue, with the latter being secured with a side mesh material that give this sneaker an overall bootie design. Over it is the classic lacing system that can be used to adjust how snug you want to wear them. The overall upper construction is a quite standard one for a sneaker under $100 , with synthetic materials that will last but they do not excel in any particular aspect.
Sole Unit
The sole unit is what makes this sneaker be somewhat unique, with the overall look being an oversized one where the TPU piece above the Air Max unit takes the spotlight. Other than its cool looks it seems like Nike is looking to enhance the Air Max cushioning from the heel unit with the foot being kept in place by this hard material placed just above it. It comes with a price, however, this part clearly adds some weight to the shoe. The rest of the midsole doesn’t seem to help much in this regard, being made of classic EVA foam with high density. What it became clear during our Nike Air Max SYSTM review is that the sole construction makes these somehow less versatile than most from this category from the brand. Aside from its casual , everyday wear use we can see them as a good fit for some training especially for lifting weights (due to the enhanced support in the sole). Surely running in these is not something that we cannot recommend. The rubber outsole pattern adds some basic traction, another part of a sneaker that doesn’t excel in any way.
Are Nike Air Max SYSTM good for running?
The Nike Air Max SYSTM is not the most suitable choice for running, much like most from the Air Max series. They are comfortable and plushy but the sole construction, with a TPU piece above the Air Max unit, while adding stability , it makes them feel a bit clunky when running. The EVA used for these shoes is pretty stiff and the shoe overall is pretty heavy for running.
Are Nike Air Max SYSTM good for walking?
The Nike Air Max SYSTM is a great option for everyday wear, including for long walks. The combination of the Air Max heel unit with the EVA in the front makes it so when you walk with these you get good energy return and you feet will not get too tired too fast. Moreover, the sole construction makes this shoe very stabile and it offers good arch support for long hours.
Bottom Line
To conclude our Nike Air Max SYSTM review, this is a cool looking shoe at a somewhat affordable price that will last for a while. If you’re looking for a shoe to wear every day for long hours this is surely one to consider. For some that need extra arch support these may be a great choice; the combination of the not so soft EVA midsole and the extra support coming from the TPU unit is surely something that many will appreciate.
